Magnetic LED Troffer Retrofit Kits: A Commercial Buyer's Guide for 2026

Magnetic LED Troffer Retrofit Kits: A Commercial Buyer’s Guide for 2026

Summary: Compare magnetic LED troffer retrofit kits, LED tubes, and new troffers for commercial fluorescent-to-LED upgrades. Learn when to retain a sound housing, what to verify before ordering, and which ARK Lighting T8 strip-kit options fit your project.

Fluorescent troffers still serve offices, schools, corridors, clinics, and public buildings. If the housing is sound, you may not need to replace the entire fixture. A magnetic LED troffer retrofit kit retains the host housing and replaces the fluorescent light source with LED strips and a driver.

What is a magnetic LED troffer retrofit kit?

A magnetic retrofit kit includes LED strips, a driver, wiring components, and mounting hardware. Permanent magnets attach the strips to the metal troffer body. The ceiling opening and host housing remain in place, subject to the kit instructions and the fixture condition.

Magnets simplify strip placement. They do not eliminate electrical work. The installer must isolate power, inspect the host fixture, follow the current wiring diagram, and meet local electrical requirements.

LED tubesLowest initial equipment-cost projectsBallast, lampholders, maintenance, and control compatibility
New LED trofferDamaged housings or a redesigned spaceFixture removal, ceiling work, and disposal

The U.S. Department of Energy evaluates these three routes in its troffer-upgrade guidance: tubular LEDs, retrofit kits, and replacement luminaires. Read the DOE guide.

When magnetic LED strips make sense

Choose a magnetic strip kit when the troffer body is straight, secure, and suitable for conversion, but fluorescent lamps, ballasts, or light distribution need replacement. The approach can suit common 1x2 ft, 2x2 ft, 1x4 ft, and 2x4 ft troffers when the selected kit matches the host fixture.

It is a practical option when you need to retain the ceiling grid and housing, replace the light engine, specify non-dimming or 0–10V dimming, and repeat a configuration across several rooms or sites.

Choose a new troffer when the existing housing has corrosion, loose mounting, damaged optics, or a visible finish problem. A retrofit kit cannot correct an unsuitable enclosure.

What to send with a quotation request

ItemWhat to provide
Fixture size1x2, 2x2, 1x4, 2x4, or measured internal dimensions
VoltageSupply voltage, such as 100–277V or 347V
Required outputRoom use, mounting height, target light level, and fixture photos
ControlsNon-dimming, 0–10V, sensor, or networked-control requirement
ColorRequired CCT, CRI, and matching needs for adjacent spaces
ComplianceProject country, certification, and documentation requirements

Use a photometric plan for larger projects. Wattage alone cannot confirm light level, uniformity, or glare.

ARK Lighting T8 magnetic strip kit: published options

ARK Lighting’s T8 magnetic LED strip retrofit kit uses permanent magnets and end mounting holes. The published range includes AC 100–277V or AC 347V input, 3000K to 6500K CCT, non-dimming or 0–10V dimming, and external drivers from 9W to 72W.

ARK lists 150 lm/W without a cover and 140 lm/W with a cover. Published 4 ft configurations range from 18W / 2,700 lm to 72W / 10,800 lm. Confirm the current datasheet, exact model, and photometric data before specification.

Project questionDetail to confirm
Will the kit fit?Internal dimensions, strip layout, lens, and reflector clearance
Is dimming required?0–10V or non-dimming driver
Does supply voltage match?AC 100–277V or AC 347V configuration
Does the site need smart control?Bluetooth magnetic-strip options and control requirements

ARK notes that the magnetic quick-connect step can take about three minutes. This is a component-installation reference. Site access, lockout/tagout, legacy-component removal, wiring, testing, and inspection determine project labor time.

Installation and approval checklist

UL advises project teams to evaluate a retrofit kit and its installation instructions together. Individually certified components do not prove that a converted fixture meets project requirements. Review UL’s retrofit-kit guidance.

Before installation, confirm that:

  1. The host troffer is structurally sound and suitable for the kit.

  2. The exact kit’s certification and markings meet the project requirements.

  3. The installer has the current instructions, wiring diagram, and driver specification.

  4. The selected 0–10V driver is compatible with the proposed control system.

  5. A pilot installation is checked for output, glare, flicker, appearance, and emergency-lighting interaction.

For North American projects, confirm model-specific compliance. UL 1598C covers LED retrofit luminaire conversion kits, but suitability still depends on the exact kit and host fixture. See UL’s standard update.

Frequently asked questions

Are magnetic LED strip kits suitable for 2x4 troffers?

They can be, provided the kit dimensions, mounting arrangement, driver, and instructions match the host fixture. ARK lists its T8 magnetic strip kit for fixture sizes that include 2x4 ft troffers. Confirm internal dimensions before ordering.

Do magnetic strips eliminate electrical work?

No. Magnets simplify strip placement inside a metal troffer. Electrical conversion still requires the specified wiring process and local compliance.

Can a magnetic retrofit kit support 0–10V dimming?

Yes, when the selected kit includes a compatible 0–10V driver and the controls and wiring support it. ARK lists 0–10V dimming as an option. Confirm the exact driver before purchase.

What should I send ARK Lighting for a project quotation?

Send fixture size, internal photos, voltage, quantity, target output, CCT, control needs, project location, and certification requirements. That allows ARK to recommend a project configuration rather than a generic strip length.

Request a project review

For a commercial fluorescent-to-LED upgrade that retains sound troffer housings, ARK’s magnetic strip kit provides options across common fixture sizes, output packages, voltage, and dimming requirements. View the T8 magnetic LED strip retrofit kit or request a layout and sample.
